M.Tech. Translational Engineering

1. General

The Higher Education Department, Govt. of Kerala, foreseeing the growing demand for Translational Research, way back in 2015, started the two year interdisciplinary M.Tech. programme in Translational Engineering, to mould a handful of young Translational Engineers, possessing the much wanted Translational Research skills. This two year M.Tech. Programme hosted by Govt. Engineering College, Barton Hill through Translational Research and Professional Leadership Centre (TPLC) is approved by the AICTE and affiliated to the APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University (KTU). The duration of the course is two academic years spanning four semesters. A student who successfully completes the programme will be awarded M.Tech. degree in Translational Engineering by the APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University.

2. Eligibility

(a) The candidates applying for admission to M.Tech. Translational Engineering programme should possess B.Tech. or any equivalent degree in any Engineering discipline from a University approved by AICTE. If the degree is from a University outside India, certificate of equivalency issued by Association of Indian Universities (AIU) is mandatory.
(b) The candidate should have a minimum CGPA which is equivalent to 60% aggregate marks. For SC/ST candidates a pass in the Engineering degree course is sufficient. For SEBC/OEC candidates, a minimum CGPA equivalent to 55%* aggregate marks in the Engineering degree examination is mandatory. (*as prescribed by APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University)
(c) Candidates who have passed AMIE/AMIETE examination and satisfying the condition of a minimum mark of 55% for section B in AMIE/AMIETE examinations are also eligible for admission to M.Tech. Translational Engineering.(Relaxation if any as prescribed by APJ Abdul Kalam Technological University).
(d) Candidates who have appeared for the final semester examination can also apply, provided he/she has passed all the subjects up to and including the 6 th semester exam. Confirmation of admission of such candidates shall be subject to the production of qualifying degree satisfying clauses (a) to (c) as applicable at the time of admission.
i) Sponsored candidates from the Government Departments can apply for the programme through proper channel.
ii) The sponsored candidates, if they fail to qualify within the period specified in APJAKTU ordinance/regulations, the entire expense incurred by Govt. for them should be refunded to the concerned department. Within 6 months after qualification, they have to present a demo of a project before their Department Head as to how the knowledge they have acquired can be applied in their department/agency in an Engineering project. They have to execute a bond to this effect before admission to this course.

3. Number of seats, Age limit

(a) The total number of seats for the programme is 18. Out of the 18 seats, 8 seats are reserved for sponsored candidates from Government sector/Industry/NGO. In case of any seat lying vacant due to the absence of sponsored candidates, it will be converted to non-sponsored category.
(b) For sponsored candidates from Government departments the maximum age limit is 44 years. However, this age limit does not apply to the non-sponsored and self-funded candidates from Government sector/Industry/NGO.

4. Fees

The tuition fee for the Programme is Rs.45,000/- per semester for all categories (Additional fee like university fee, PTA fund, revenue, etc. are applicable as per common norms of other M.Tech. programmes in the college).
1. Internships
For students undergoing Internships partial financial support will be provided as per the stipulated TPLC Internship guidelines.
2. Admission
For sponsored candidates, it is mandatory that they must submit a two-page proposal of an issue or a problem in their department or any social problems for which they will carry out the research and bring up the solution at the end of the course.

5. Additional Requirements of M.Tech. Translational Engineering

(a) Departmental/Teaching Assistance for 6 hours/week for all students including sponsored candidates.
(b) Transformative programmes: Minimum two numbers for all students.
(c) Industrial visits: Maximum 5 days for the entire course.
(d) Socially responsible activities- Each student has to attend a mandatory socially relevant camp for minimum 5 days duration outside their home station involving in socially responsible activities and 5 days socially responsible activities in Trivandrum.
(e) A minimum of six weeks mandatory internship at a reputed national/International Institute, reputed industries and startups supported by Government Engineering College Barton Hill. This is facilitated to expose the students to real-time projects and different working cultures and social problems, thereby moulding them into socially responsible professionals. Students will be sent for internships based on the assessment and approval of the TPLC institutional level committee.
(f) Three MOOC course of not less than 8 weeks duration.
(g) A compulsory on the job training will be facilitated under a Governmental/Non- Governmental Organisation/Industry spanning 3 months named the “Social Butterfly Programme”, to address the ongoing and emerging global challenges and collective transformation of individuals through a technological, economical and cultural restructuring framework, after the final University exams.

(e) Merit scholarship as per TPLC guidelines for one student not availing any other scholarship.
